One of the smallest owl species in North America, the northern saw-whet is known for its distinctive, high-pitched call — often likened to the sound of a saw being sharpened on a whetstone.

The northern saw-whet nests in coniferous forests, where it hunts by night, swooping down on mice and other small mammals. Sharp-eyed birdwatchers may catch a glimpse of the saw-whet at Tommy Thompson Park during the fall.
